Ethos
A warm home from home environment where every child is valued and supported
At Wild Sunflower Childcare, my ethos has always been about creating a warm, nurturing, home-from-home environment where children feel completely safe, valued, and free to be themselves. Childminding isn’t just my job, it’s something I genuinely love. I became a childminder because I wanted to offer more personal, one-to-one care in smaller groups, where I can really get to know each child, build strong bonds, and create meaningful relationships. It’s so important to me that the children in my care feel like this is another home for them.
I follow the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) and support children across the seven areas of learning: Communication and Language, Physical Development, Personal, Social and Emotional Development, Literacy, Mathematics, Understanding the World, and Expressive Arts and Design. That might sound formal, but in reality it simply means that learning is woven naturally into everything we do. Whether we’re playing, exploring outdoors, baking, reading stories, or chatting during snack time, there are always opportunities for growth. Every child is different, and I plan around their interests and developmental stage so they can learn in a way that feels exciting and right for them.
Our days are full of creative, hands-on experiences. I love setting up themed tuff trays that spark curiosity and imagination, from messy sensory play and small world scenes to seasonal activities and topic-based invitations to explore. Watching children become absorbed in their play and learning is one of the best parts of what I do.
Being outdoors and part of our local community is a huge part of life here. We’re often out and about visiting parks, shops, and local groups. These outings help children build confidence, social skills, and independence while learning about the world around them. Nature is important to me too, noticing the seasons change, collecting leaves, jumping in puddles, or simply enjoying fresh air every day. I truly believe children thrive when they have regular access to the outdoors.
I also love embracing different cultures and celebrations throughout the year. We take part in events such as World Book Day, Easter, Christmas, and many other cultural and global celebrations. Exploring stories, traditions, food, music, and crafts from around the world helps children develop understanding, respect, and curiosity about others.
Supporting families is just as important to me as supporting the children. I work closely with parents to keep things consistent between home and my setting, whether that’s healthy eating, sleep routines, potty training, behaviour support, or emotional wellbeing. I want parents to feel comfortable, listened to, and supported. I see our relationship as a partnership, because when we work together, children truly flourish.
Alongside the nurturing side of my role, I take my professional responsibilities very seriously. Safeguarding is always my top priority, and I make sure I stay fully up to date with legislation and best practice guidance. I hold all required qualifications, including paediatric first aid, and I regularly update my training to go beyond what is required. I maintain clear policies, complete thorough risk assessments, and ensure my setting is safe, organised, and secure at all times.
Above everything, my goal is simple: to create a happy, caring space where children feel secure, confident, and excited to learn. I want them to build strong foundations for their future while enjoying a childhood filled with warmth, discovery, and joy.
